Created by David Higgins, the design of the Sacred Isle Tarot is in the European graphic novel style but you won’t find any line drawings in the same way. The colours blend beautifully creating a 2D effect often missing in that style. The nudity though, we have to talk about that.
As with other European style decks, particularly Lo Scarabeo, nudity is prominent and that the bodies (usually of women) are bordering on pornographic. Nudity in the esoteric depicts purity, not porn and so it’s a fair complaint.
While some people complained about the Hanged Man’s genitals on display in the DruidCraft tarot, those same people could easily make the same complaint about the chained lover in the Devil of the Sacred Isle Tarot. It is graphic and while people say the devil is in the details, in this card, it really is.
The Sacred Isle Tarot is beautiful, bright and vibrant deck. The colours are rich, the scenes aren’t overloaded with detail but contain enough to convey its meaning. Following the Rider Waite-Smith heritage, the Sacred Isle Tarot is easy to read with, chatty and direct.
