How to Read a Daily Tarot Card

Reading a daily tarot card at the beginning & end of the day is a great way to learn tarot, what the cards mean as well as how to read tarot for yourself.

As a beginner, learning to read the tarot can seem difficult and daunting. In a tarot spread, the cards don’t sit in isolation from one another, they interact, their meanings combine, sometimes their meanings go right out of the window… So where do you start with learning to read tarot? The daily tarot card is a good place.

The Daily Tarot Card

The daily tarot card can be approached in two distinct ways: either at the beginning of the day or at the end of it. Or both, which is three… Let me explain.

Reading the Daily Tarot Card at the Beginning of the Day

It’s natural to want to know what kind of day lay ahead, especially if it’s an important day.

So being prepared makes sense, and the daily tarot card can help you with this. It’s also an extremely efficient and personal way to learn tarot, what the cards mean and how they apply to your life.

Journal your daily tarot card – write down your thoughts about the card, use free association, read intuitively, note the keywords associated with the card, the colours, the numerology, the astrology, the symbolism and create a narrative for the day ahead, but keep this loose – you definitely do not want to create this day ahead of itself. It would be easy here to let confirmation bias dictate the day and create a self-fulfilling prophecy. You are looking for an outline, or signposts that you need to take note of so you can navigate the day more successfully.

Reading the Daily Tarot Card at the End of the Day

The benefits of reading a daily tarot card at the end of the day may not be obvious at first, but when you consider you already know how the day went, your daily tarot card now becomes a retrospective reflection of the day.

You can look at that card and see how a symbol applied to an event, or how the meaning of the card showed itself more generally over the course of the day. It’s a good way to make connections to a card, its meaning, numerology, astrology and other associations. In other words, reading the daily tarot card at the end of the day is a great way to learn tarot card meanings specifically, and in situ; which is priceless.

Reading the Daily Tarot Card at the Beginning and the End of the Day

One way to supercharge the speed at which you learn tarot is by reading the daily card at the beginning and the end of the day, on the same day. You really are just blending the two techniques above.

In summary, make a note, or notes in your journal about your card for the day, then at the end of the day, look at how the day went and note what stands out as accurate. What you have here are two sets of notes you can compare. This is invaluable when you are defining your own tarot card meanings because if tarot is nothing else, it’s highly personal to the reader and the best way to define your own tarot card meanings is through personal experience.

Reading tarot for others may not be what you want to do, and that is perfectly fine. Tarot Elements is here to teach you how to read tarot for yourself and the daily tarot card is the perfect way to give yourself the experience you need to make tarot your own.

To help you see this process in action, I have shared my card for the day with you below. I note what the card means to me at first look, which usually means the keywords hit me first. This will likely become your default as you embed the meanings of the tarot in your memory.

Using my vintage Rider, I drew the Page of Wands. So for me the Page of Wands is a messenger, a bringer of news, the beginning of something new about to begin. The Page of Wands has vitality and a lot of energy and can indicate a person, event or inner process.

Looking at the card, I can see the page focused on the top of the wand itself. He is looking at the new growth of leaves. The landscape is barren except for the pyramids in the distance. The stance of the page is light and he doesn’t look troubled. Despite the setting being a desert, the page is well dressed with a cape and boots. There is no incremental weather shown and so the environment or atmosphere is calm.

Intuitively, this card is suggesting to me that I embody the laser-like focus of the page today. Ignore what may normally be distracting and see to the goal in hand. Seeing as I’m writing this blog post, blogging is my focus. As I have been working behind the scenes on the blog and have begun writing again, this page is indicating I keep focused on this activity. As I am easily distracted, this is good advice.

In Thoth based tarot decks, the Page of Wands becomes the Princess of Wands and as such, she is feisty, a little impetuous, sensual, sexual, passionate and sometimes overbearing. I can be all of those things so I will check myself often today for my temper and my wild imagination in case it runs riot and causes one…

So after I have completed this blog post, I will continue to write on the other tarot projects I am working on. I may also hear some good news in relation to my blogging activities or see some other notification that encourages me to keep the pace of the day.

How Did the Page of Wands Look at the End of the Day

I did finish writing this blog post, but I didn’t write anything else! As if by magic, the day was lost on a host of other things that I had neglected that were time sensitive. But here’s the kicker – I got everything done, with efficiency and organisation. In addition, I had a high level of energy today, which is amazing because it’s been a tough week physically, and I’m also recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome.

The Page of Wands showed himself today and I learnt some new things about him in relation to my life. Those pyramids I now see as the problems or tasks that arose today and stacked up, one by one. A line of problems queuing like a row of pyramids. With a laser-like focus, I dealt with them, one at a time, and ended the day having achieved things that weren’t even on my to-do list.

It’s 11pm and I’m just finishing up on this post. I am tired, there is no doubt, my bed is calling and boy does it look great from here. But it’s 11pm and I’m still up. I can’t tell you how great that feels. Also, I managed to keep a lid on the more feisty aspects of my nature. Maturity continues, even in my fifties!

The words of Zach Wong, creator of the Revelations Tarot have also inspired me today with his take on the Page of Wands:

The Page of Wands represents beginning realizations of the power that we hold within. It reflects a dawn of creativity or an upsurge of energy within. You may begin to feel you understand things more, have the need to apply yourself, or explore all avenues of interest.

These words really hit home for me, not just as my daily tarot card, but on a very personal level: physically and mentally. Gradually my life has been coming back to me after too much time being unwell. What I achieved today for me, was sensational. The Page of Wands showed me that I have the capacity to finish what I set out to do and also handle last minute distractions and obligations. I’m particularly interested in the laser-like focus the page uses and will use that as my take away from this card, moving into tomorrow.

I’m always really interested to hear how you all read tarot and how it may differ from how I do it. If you have a particular way to read the your daily tarot card, please do share it with us in the comments.
